List Of Hopeful Massachusetts Sports Betting Operators Announced
It’s been a busy week in the Massachusetts sports betting world. Monday was deadline day for any potential Massachusetts sports betting provider to submit their initial scoping survey to the state. Now, the list of potential operators has been announced.
The initial scoping survey was required in order for sports betting companies to be considered for the first issued licenses in Massachusetts.
Initially, there were over 40 companies expressing interest in a Massachusetts sports betting license. Through the scoping survey, the public now knows exactly who and how many companies are eligible for a Massachusetts sports betting license. It also helps the public find out which companies are seeking specific licenses.
Breakdown Of Massachusetts Sports Betting Scene
In total, 29 sports betting companies are looking to enter the Massachusetts market. Of those, 23 are in the running for a Massachusetts mobile sports betting license. The other six are in the market for retail sports betting licenses. The six facilities looking to gain retail licensure are the state’s three retail casinos (MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor, Plainridge Park Casino) and three simulcast/racing facilities. All six retail facilities are eligible to apply for in-person and mobile licenses under the Massachusetts sports betting law.
Until recently, only two simulcast facilities – Raynham Park and Suffolk Downs – were considered likely to seek retail sports betting licenses and separate licenses for mobile sportsbook apps branded to each facility. Then in early October, Great Meadowbrook Farm in Hardwick announced it is also seeking to operate retail sports betting next year.

Sports betting companies that submitted requested information by the Oct. 17 deadline are now potential applicants for a Massachusetts sports betting license. In total, there are 29 operators interested in entering the Massachusetts sports betting market. They are as follows:

Potential Massachusetts Sports Betting Launch Timeline
Earlier this fall, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) released a tentative timeline for the MA sports betting launch that would see retail betting start in January 2023. Mobile betting would follow in February or March.
Some commissioners believed a January 2023 timeline was too aggressive. Some commissioners argued that timelines centered around launching before specific sporting events would put undue difficulties on the MGC. At the same time, other commissioners said that it was just the reality of the market, and they understood the aggressive timelines.
This timeline is unofficial, but now that we know which companies are in the mix, the wheels are turning.
