Here, Boston must win by more than 1.5 runs, aka two runs or more. If you were to bet on New York, the Yankees would cover the spread if they lost by just one run or won by any score.
You also should notice that the odds are different depending on which team you wager on. That’s typically the case for baseball (run line) and hockey (puck line) spread bets. For football and basketball, the odds usually will be equal, or close to equal, for spread bets.
Making Totals Wagers
Totals are bets you place on the total combined score of the game. The sportsbook will set a line — in our example, it’s 8.5 — and you can wager whether the actual total score will be over or under that line. Hence the other name for totals bets: Over/Unders.
