Patriots prop bets

Each week, sportsbooks offer a lot more than simple moneyline, spread, and total bets. Other popular types of wagers include prop bets. These come in the form of both team and player props.

Common NFL player props for individual games include a QB throwing over or under his listed total for passing yards.

For example, consider a game in which Mac Jones’ passing yards total is listed at 210.5. If you bet on the over, you would need Jones to throw for at least 211 yards to win your bet. If you bet on the under, you would need Jones to stay under 210.5 passing yards to win.

Other types of player props include rushing yards, receptions, total rushes, and touchdowns. At some sportsbooks, you also may find season-long player total bets that take into account the full season or (potentially) some happenings in the offseason. These are some season-long player prop bets:

  • NFL rushing leader and NFL passing leader
  • Total passing yards from a specific quarterback (Over/Under)
  • Total rushing yards for a specific running back (Over/Under)
  • Number of interceptions thrown for a specific quarterback (Over/Under)
  • Number of receiving touchdowns for a specific receiver (Over/Under)
  • First overall selection in the NFL Draft

How to bet on the New England Patriots

When betting on the NFL, you will find a seemingly endless amount of wagers on Massachusetts sportsbooks. However, there are three types of wagers that are the most popular: moneyline, spreads, and totals (over/under). Here is how they work:

Moneyline

A moneyline bet is a bet on a team to win a specific game. You choose what team you think will win, with potential winnings based on the odds at the time of your bet. For example, if you bet on the Patriots to win and they do, you win money. Simple as that.

When betting on the moneyline, it’s important to know that favorites are noted with a minus-sign (-), while underdogs are noted with a plus-sign (+). If a sportsbook lists the Patriots with odds of -140, they are the favorite. In this scenario, you would have to bet $140 to win $100 with a Patriots victory. If the odds have the Patriots at +120, they are the underdog. A $100 bet would win you $120 with a Pats win.

Spread

Point spread betting is a great way to get in on the action. Spread bets are a bit more complicated than moneyline bets. It’s a bet on a team to win by exceeding a certain margin of victory, or to avoid losing by more than a specific number of points.

Much like moneyline bets, favorites are noted with a minus-sign (-), while underdogs are noted with a plus-sign (+). For example, consider a game in which the Patriots are 5.5-point underdogs against the Buffalo Bills. New England would be noted +5.5 on the spread. If you bet on the Patriots, you would need them to either win the game outright, or lose by five points or less, thus covering the spread. If they are 5.5-point favorites (-5.5), you would need them to win by at least six points to win your wager.

Most spread bets tend to be around odds of -110 on either side, although they can vary.

Total (over/under)

A total bet is a bet on the combined score in a game. You can bet on the two teams to have a combined score of over or under a specific number.

If the over/under is listed at 42.5, and you bet the over, you would need both teams to put up a combined score of at least 43 points to win. For example, a final score of 28-20 would give you a win. Conversely, if you bet the under, you would need the total score to stay under 42.5 points. Say a 17-10 final.

Like spread bets, bets on the total tend to be around -110 odds on either side, but they can also vary.

2023 New England Patriots playoff chances

The New England Patriots are a storied NFL franchise with a rich history of winning. Unfortunately, professional oddsmakers are not showing too much faith in the Pats for this upcoming season.

New England’s win total is listed at 7.5 on most Massachusetts sportsbooks, and for now, they appear to be on the outside looking in for the playoffs.

On DraftKings Massachusetts, the Patriots have odds of +225 to make the playoffs, and -265 to miss they playoffs. Their +225 odds to make the playoffs indicate an implied probability of 30.77%. Conversely, their odds of -265 to miss the playoffs indicates an implied probability of 72.6%.

But, it is still very early, and as we know, anything can happen. In addition, playoff odds are known to fluctuate constantly, so it would not be surprising to see these odds change before the season starts.

2022 Patriots betting results

The Patriots finished the 2022-23 NFL season with a record of 8-9 and missed the playoffs. They are looking to get back to the postseason in 2023-24.

Betting-wise, the Pats finished the season with a record of 7-9-1 against the spread. Their games went over the total eight times, while staying under the total nine times.

Here is a closer look at how the Patriots fared in the betting world last season:

  • SU: 8-9

  • O/U: 8-9
  • ATS-Home: 3-5
