Retail sports betting in Massachusetts has been live for a week, which means that sports fans in the state can now place bets for Super Bowl LVII.

Massachusetts football fans can place their bets at three Massachusetts casinos: MGM Springfield (BetMGM), Encore Boston Harbor (WynnBET), and Plainridge Park Casino (Barstool).

Each year, the Super Bowl is the most-bet singular sporting event in the country. There are hundreds of bets to choose from, and Massachusetts sports bettors now have access to all of them.

Let’s take a look at some of the wagers available in the betting market for Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles:

Moneyline, Spread, and Total Bets

Three of the most common types of football wagers include moneyline, spread, and total bets. But how do these bets work?

Moneyline bets refer to who you think will win the game. If you bet on the Chiefs to win and they do, then you win money. Simple as that.

Spread bets are a bit more complicated. In this matchup, the Eagles are currently favored by 1.5 points. If you bet on the Eagles -1.5, you would need them to win the game by two points or more in order to win your bet. Conversely, if you bet on the Chiefs +1.5, you would need them to either win the game outright, or lose by one point.

The total, commonly known as the over/under, refers to the total number of points scored in the game. As of now, the total is listed at 50.5. You can bet on the total number of points scored to either go over or stay under that number.

The chart below shows the odds for the moneyline, spread, and total (over/under) for Super Bowl LVII as of Tuesday, February 7 at various Massachusetts sportsbooks:

Player, Team, And Game Prop Bets

Other types of popular NFL wagers include proposition, or “prop” bets. These types of bets focus in on one aspect of the game, as opposed to the game as a whole. They are typically found in the form of player, team, and game props.

Player props refer to player statistics in the game. Common player props include touchdown scorers, total passing yards, total rushing yards, total receiving yards, etc. Most sportsbooks offer plenty of different prop bet types, so the list goes one and on.

Team props commonly refer to the performance of a specific team. Examples include total points, total touchdowns, total field goals, total punts, etc.

Game props are prop bets within the game, but don’t necessarily have to be focused in on one team. For example, you can bet on which team you think will score first, whether or not the game will be tied again after 0-0, and whether or not the game will go to overtime.

The markets for these types of bets are seemingly endless. There is truly something for everyone. No matter what you are looking to bet on, odds are you can find it in Super Bowl prop bet markets.

Novelty Prop Bets

Sportsbooks bring out some interesting and creative bet types for the biggest game of the year. These are called novelty props, and they are a bit more unique than the average NFL wager. These types of bets are typically not available for regular season or playoff NFL games.

Novelty props involve more obscure events at the Super Bowl, such as the coin toss, color of Gatorade poured on the winning head coach, and total length of the national anthem.

These types of bets can be very entertaining, but they are also a bit more random. Because of that, we recommend easing into the novelty prop market, as they can be very difficult to predict.

Super Bowl Betting In Massachusetts

For Massachusetts sports fans, Super Bowl bets can be placed at MGM Springfield, Encore Boston Harbor, and Plainridge Park Casino. Unfortunately, mobile betting will not be available before the Super Bowl takes place on February 12. MA mobile betting apps are expected to launch in March.

As you can see, there are seemingly endless Super Bowl wagers out there. Before you head to the casino to place your bets, take a couple minutes to research the different types of bets that are available and which ones you like. A little research could go a long way.

And as always, remember to bet responsibly.
