In a unanimous decision, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) granted Penn State Interactive (PSI) a license to provide mobile sports betting services in Massachusetts. This makes PSI the fourth online gambling operator to receive such approval. Following several weeks of public meetings and deliberations, the MGC members concluded that PSI meets the preliminary requirements for a temporary Category 3 sports wagering operator license.

PSI Must Meet Conditions to Obtain a Permanent License

As of January 2023, PSI operates Barstool Sportsbook, which is currently available in 15 states. Massachusetts is the upcoming addition to their expanding list.

The approval of a temporary license for PSI by the MGC was contingent upon certain specific conditions.

The commissioners have mandated that the licensee must agree to the following terms: no individuals under the age of 21 will be allowed to attend any live Barstool College Football Show events, complete cooperation with an investigation by the IEB regarding Barstool Sports, Inc.’s branding, regular updates to the IEB regarding discussions held during executive sessions, and submission of diversity goals for both workforce and supplier expenditure to the MGC.

PSI must fulfill the mentioned prerequisites and also obtain an operations certificate and meet further conditions prior to accepting wagers on approved sporting events.

All MA Casinos Are Set to Offer Retail and Online Sports Betting

Category 3 licenses are exclusively granted to online sports betting operators. WynnBet became the inaugural recipient of a Category 3 license, with BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook joining later in December. Currently, all the mobile betting operators authorized to function in the Commonwealth are affiliated with the state’s brick-and-mortar casinos.

  • WynnBET and Caesars Sportsbook team up at Encore Boston Harbor.
  • MGM Springfield: BetMGM
  • Plainridge Park Casino (PPC) is now partnering with Penn Sports Interactive, specifically the popular brand Barstool.

The casinos, classified as Category 1 operators, have the opportunity to team up with a maximum of two Category 3 operators. PPC stated their intention to collaborate with the upcoming Fanatics Sportsbook, which has yet to be introduced.

Sports Betting Launch Just Around the Corner

The launch of retail sports betting in Massachusetts is scheduled to happen before the month ends, while the MGC has set its sights on launching online sports wagering in March.

In the upcoming year, the MGC will be holding numerous open meetings throughout January to discuss the remaining applications for a Category 3 license. These discussions will be available for the public to watch live on the MGC’s YouTube channel.
