Massachusetts sports enthusiasts wasted no time in placing their bets.

Massachusetts sports enthusiasts placed bets exceeding $548 million through the state’s six online sportsbook apps, following their launch on March 10.

During the period of March 10-31, a staggering $24.9 million was wagered each day.

It goes without saying that sports betting in Massachusetts has been an outstanding success since its introduction earlier this year.

Online betting drives Massachusetts market

In its inaugural month, Massachusetts became the third state to achieve a total handle exceeding $500 million in online sports wagering, following New York’s accomplishment of over $1 billion in January 2022 and Ohio’s achievement of $1.1 billion in January 2023.

In March, the mobile sports betting in Massachusetts generated a taxable revenue of $45.6 million over a span of 22 days.

In contrast, a total of $1.5 million was generated from the three retail sportsbooks located at Encore Boston Harbor, Plainridge Park Casino, and MGM Springfield.

In summary, the mobile sports betting operators contributed a total of $9.1 million in tax revenue to the state.

In Massachusetts, mobile sports betting operators face a tax rate of 20% on their taxable sports wagering revenue. Considering the influx of over $9 million in March alone, there is a potential for the state to collect up to $100 million in taxes from online sports betting operators by 2023.

Sports betting scene in Massachusetts

The month of March witnessed the thrilling NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, igniting the fervor for college sports betting. Additionally, the NBA and NHL were actively engaged in their respective competitions.

In April, the sports betting activity in the state is expected to increase with the addition of Red Sox betting. Moreover, the NHL Playoffs and NBA Playoffs will also be ongoing during this month.

Since the opening of casinos in Massachusetts in 2015, the state has accumulated a total of $1.374 billion in taxes and assessments from the casino operations of Plainridge Park, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor. With the introduction of legal sports betting, the overall amount increases to $1.383 billion.
