DraftKings will celebrate the launch of online sports betting in Massachusetts with an event outside the company’s Boston headquarters at 500 Boylston St. in Back Bay.

At 10 a.m. ET on March 10, MA online sports betting will officially be illegal. At the same time, DraftKings is hosting a first bet celebration. Beloved former Boston Celtic and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine will be on hand. So will DraftKings co-founders Jason Robin, Matt Kalish and Paul Liberman. A handful of Massachusetts lawmakers will be present, too.

To help celebrate, the Boston-based sportsbook will also be cueing a DraftKings-themed Duck Boat.

Can DraftKings win big in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts will be DraftKings’ 20th legal US state, but arguably its most important. FanDuel has separated itself as the clear leader in the US sports betting market. In its 2022 investors presentation, FanDuel revealed it owned 50% of the US sports betting market in Q4. That’s staggering.

But if there was any state where DraftKings has a shot to be No. 1 instead of No. 2, it’s Massachusetts — its home state.

DraftKings has recruited Massachusetts athletes and celebrities to help their cause. Red Sox legend and Hall of Famer David Ortiz appeared in the sportsbook’s Super Bowl commercial, alongside Kevin Hart. And, on March 10, DraftKings will air a commercial in Massachussetts starting Ortiz, Scalabrine, Boston Bruins legend Zdeno Chara, Olympic gold medalist and MA native Aly Raisman and more.

Expected welcome promo offer in MA

DraftKings Massachusetts is also expected to offer new MA bettors a lucrative, two-part welcome promo. New customers in the Commonwealth will get a 20% deposit match up to $1,000 (with a 5x playthrough requirement), as well as a $50 bonus bet if they deposit $5 or more.

DraftKings is one of six Massachusetts sportsbook apps launching Friday. The other five:

  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • WynnBET

Bally Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook will launch in May. Betway expects to launch in January 2024.
