In the 2022-23 season, Boston Celtics fans can expect a special tribute to honor the greatest player in the franchise’s history. The legendary Bill Russell will be commemorated throughout the season, with a remarkable display on the team’s home court at TD Garden. As a gesture of respect to the renowned Hall of Famer and his exceptional skills in the paint, the parquet floor will feature the number 6 elegantly painted in both free throw lanes.

Russell’s Instant Impact

Russell’s arrival to the Boston Celtics in 1956 had an instant and significant effect. His debut season brought an unparalleled defensive prowess to the team, which played a crucial role in securing their first-ever NBA championship during his rookie year.

In the 1960s, he laid the groundwork for the franchise’s era of dominance. Breaking barriers in 1966, he became the league’s inaugural Black head coach, taking over from Red Auerbach, who hailed him as “the most formidable presence the game has ever seen,” while leading Boston.

Season-Long Tributes Around The NBA

Russell, apart from his basketball career, was a vocal advocate for civil rights and known for his intellect. Even after his passing in late July 2022, his contributions were not forgotten. In August, both the NBA and the player’s union made the decision to retire his iconic uniform number, 6, league-wide. As a tribute, teams across the league will proudly display a number 6 decal near the scorer’s table.

During the 2022-23 season, the Celtics have scheduled two special evenings honoring Russell, with the first being the season opener on Oct. 18. Furthermore, on Feb. 12, 2023, which would have been Russell’s 89th birthday, the team intends to dedicate that day’s game to him. Additionally, in 12 games this season, Boston players will don Bill Russell City Edition jerseys.

The Celtics will honor the legacy of the 11-time NBA champion and Olympic gold medalist this season, given their extensive list of achievements and the individual’s reputation as a compassionate advocate for the oppressed. It is the hope of many fans that the No. 6 on the team’s floor will become a permanent symbol of his contribution.
