Boston Globe Media Partners is facing scrutiny following a lawsuit alleging that the company owes Better Collective over $750,000. Last year, Globe Media had established a partnership with the Danish company.

Better Collective’s objective was straightforward: With the launch of sports betting in Massachusetts, they would supply sports gambling content for Boston.com, a website owned by Globe Media.

According to the lawsuit, the deal did not unfold as initially anticipated.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the events that transpired and the future prospects of the Boston Globe’s parent company.

Better Collective’s agreement with Globe Media

Located in Copenhagen, Better Collective is a prominent sports gambling media group that collaborates with renowned industry leaders to offer top-quality content. Notable partners of the group include the Action Network, VegasInsider, and bettingexpert.com. In addition, Better Collective conducts business with prominent entities like bet365, Betfair, Unibet, and FanDuel.

The lawsuit claims that Globe Media contacted Better Collective with the purpose of producing sports betting content for its website, Boston.com. In August 2022, both parties reached an agreement in anticipation of Massachusetts legalizing sports betting.

As part of the agreement, Better Collective was obligated to utilize its connections to deliver sports betting advertisements from multiple operators. In reciprocation, Boston.com committed to integrating a specialized sports betting section on its website, featuring exclusive content from Better Collective.

According to Better Collective’s lawsuit, Globe Media presented itself as a trustworthy, dependable, and dedicated business partner in order to convince BC to engage in business transactions and pay them substantial fees. However, it was later discovered that Globe Media was, in fact, the complete opposite of what they claimed to be.

Play MA contacted the Boston Globe to obtain a statement, but unfortunately, Globe Media did not provide a response to the comment request.

Where it went wrong

Better Collective has filed a lawsuit claiming that Globe Media did not fulfill its obligations as agreed.

The lawsuit claims that Boston.com had no marketing efforts, links on the home page, or search-engine optimization prior to its launch.

According to the lawsuit, Globe Media has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees from BC, which it has not refunded despite being undeserving of them. As a result, Globe Media has been unjustly enriched.

Better Collective is filing a lawsuit alleging that Globe Media’s breach of contract caused them to miss out on profitable market opportunities, leading to further financial losses.

Moreover, the lawsuit filed by Better Collective claims that the agreement was negatively affected by the gambling advertisement restrictions in Massachusetts.

Better Collective alleges that the lawsuit claims both Globe Media and Better Collective had previously agreed to discuss a reduction in fees owed to the parent company of Globe. However, Better Collective argues that the implementation of Massachusetts’ new advertising regulations should have led to a revised agreement.

In early February, the company made attempts to establish communication with Globe Media.

According to the lawsuit, Globe Media declined to engage in any conversation regarding a fee reduction and failed to rectify significant breaches of the agreement.

Better Collective asserts in the lawsuit that Globe Media sought a more advantageous association with DraftKings Massachusetts.

According to the lawsuit, it is believed that Globe Media declined negotiations as it desired to terminate its association with BC in order to establish or enhance its business ties with DraftKings under more advantageous conditions.

What’s next for the Boston Globe?

It has no intention of remaining still.

Globe Media recently dismissed the lawsuit as lacking merit. In a statement provided to the Boston Herald, Globe Media asserted that Better Collective failed to fulfill their obligations, leading to significant damage.

Globe Media informed the Herald that they plan to file counterclaims and emerge victorious in this baseless lawsuit, as stated by BGMP.

Additionally, please take note: Massachusetts has declined the inclusion of slap fighting in its sports wagering catalog.
