Massachusetts retail sportsbooks achieved a total betting volume of $25.7 million during their inaugural month of operation.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission recently published the February revenue reports for the sportsbooks located at the state’s three casinos: Encore Boston Harbor, MGM Springfield, and Plainridge Park Casino.

Out of the total sports betting handle of $25,726,634.76, the three Massachusetts casinos generated $2 million in revenue.

In February, Plainridge Park Casino achieved the highest revenue, totaling $890,555.32. Encore Boston Harbor followed closely behind with $857,602.14 in revenue, while MGM Springfield reported $262,066.08.

In February, the state of Massachusetts collected $301,533.52 through tax payments from sports betting.

It is worth mentioning that despite being the inaugural full month of Massachusetts sports betting, February had only 28 days.

Massachusetts casino sportsbook February revenues

Due to the limited availability of casino sportsbooks, being open for only one day in January, specifically on January 31st, the total amount of sports betting handled in Massachusetts for the month was a meager $510,948.04. As a result of this single day of operation, Encore Boston Harbor experienced a negative revenue of $74,320.15, indicating a loss. Interestingly, WynnBET Massachusetts bettors had a highly successful day on January 31st.

A wealth of information can be obtained from analyzing data accumulated over a complete month.

Retail Casino Handle Revenue Taxes
Encore Boston Harbor $16,900,615 $857,602 $128,640
Plainridge Park Casino $7,059,460 $890,555 $133,583
MGM Springfield $1,766,650 $262,066 $39,310
Total $25,726,635 $2,010,224 $301,534

It is important to mention that before the introduction of online betting, all three retail casinos in MA allowed bets on the Super Bowl last month. Play MA had predicted that Super Bowl 57, held on Feb. 12 between Philadelphia and Kansas City, would generate slightly over $7 million in total bets.

Encore Boston Harbor

Even though EBH didn’t have the highest revenue, it had the largest handle among all three Massachusetts casinos, amounting to $16,900,614.83. Nevertheless, its revenue hold of 5.3% was significantly lower compared to the other two casinos (as it was on Jan. 31), resulting in a payout of $15,999,831.05 to bettors.

The tax payment made by EBH in February amounted to $128,640.32.

Plainridge Park Casino

In the month of February, the total sports betting handle at PPC amounted to $7,059,459.93. The revenue hold for this period was 12.82%, resulting in a payout of $6,154,128.67 to bettors at its Barstool Massachusetts Sportsbook.

In February, Massachusetts received a payment of $133,583.29 from PPC as taxes.

MGM Springfield

In February, MGM Springfield recorded a handle of $1,766,650, making it the lowest reported amount. However, it also boasted the highest hold at 15.09%, resulting in a payout of $1,500,003.4 to its bettors.

The tax payment for sports betting in February by MGM Springfield amounted to $39,309.91.

Breaking down the numbers

The highest revenue in sports betting doesn’t always come from the highest handle.

We observed this trend with the data from Jan. 31, and it continues to be evident with the February figures obtained from Massachusetts’ three casino sportsbooks.

Similar to January 31st, Encore Boston Harbor once again recorded the highest betting activity by a significant margin. This is expected to remain consistent due to its advantageous location just north of Boston, the most populous city in Massachusetts. However, resembling the previous occurrence, Plainridge Park Casino did not experience the same level of luck for its bettors as those at EBH.

The difference was significant enough that PPC recorded approximately $23,000 more in revenue, despite having nearly $10 million less in handle.
