Last weekend, Downtown Springfield witnessed the grand opening of MGM Springfield, offering an extensive range of dining, drinking, and entertainment choices. However, it should be clear that MGM Springfield is primarily a casino, being the second commercial casino in Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, the casino offers an impressive gaming area spanning 125,000 square feet, featuring a collection of 2,550 slot machines and 120 table games.

The range of table games available is comparable to those found in upscale casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dealers at MGM Springfield have two paths to join the team: either by migrating from other New England casinos or by completing the comprehensive training program at the Massachusetts Casino Career Training Institute specifically designed for MGM Springfield. To incentivize new dealers to stay with the company, those who remain employed for at least 12 months will have their tuition costs reimbursed.

Table games at MGM Springfield

MGM Springfield offers a wide range of table games for players to enjoy.

  • Blackjack
  • Craps
  • Roulette
  • Mini Baccarat
  • Midi Baccarat
  • Pai Gow
  • Three Card Poker
  • Four Card Poker
  • Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em
  • Criss Cross
  • Chase the Flush
  • War
  • Big 6

The blackjack, craps, and roulette options at MGM Springfield are quite typical and will be recognizable to the majority of casino goers in the United States.

Baccarat and other table games

However, many people may be less acquainted with Mini Baccarat and Midi Baccarat.

Mini Baccarat is specifically crafted to offer a more accessible and speedy alternative to traditional Baccarat games, typically confined to high-stakes sections of casinos. Unlike the standard 14 spots, Mini Baccarat tables generally accommodate only seven players. Additionally, the dealer reveals both the player and banker hands, eliminating the need for players to handle the cards.

Midi Baccarat closely resembles high-stakes Baccarat, with tables typically accommodating up to nine positions. The player who places the highest wager on the player’s hand has the privilege to reveal it, while the player with the highest bet on the banker’s hand gets to reveal that hand. However, extended and slow squeezing, as commonly seen in high-stakes Baccarat, is generally not encouraged.

Popular variations of poker table games include Pai Gow, Three Card Poker, Four Card Poker, and Ultimate Texas Hold ‘Em.

Criss Cross is a variation of poker played on a table, which is not as widely known, where players place bets based on the strength of their hands. The game is played using five community cards that are arranged in a cross shape and kept face down. The objective is to form various hands based on the patterns formed by the cross.

Chase the Flush presents a less widely-known poker table game variation where players go head-to-head against a dealer. The objective is to create the longest seven-card flush possible, using three hole cards and four community cards. The winner is determined by having a greater number of cards of the same suit compared to the dealer.

War is a casino game that draws its inspiration from the children’s card game of the identical name. Meanwhile, Big 6 is a casino wheel game resembling the popular Wheel of Fortune-style gameplay.

During its opening weekend, MGM Springfield allegedly provided a variety of table games with minimum limits as low as $15.

The MGM Springfield poker room

MGM Springfield has put all speculation to rest with its extensive table game offering, which includes a poker room boasting 23 tables.

According to the MGM Springfield website, their poker room offers an unparalleled poker experience in a unique and unprecedented setting for players.

The room is equipped with multiple luxurious finishes, such as:

  • Every seat is equipped with a mobile phone docking station.
  • The leather chairs have been designed to be adjustable, taking inspiration from the luxurious seats found in a Rolls Royce.
  • There are 16 high-definition televisions spread across the room.

Additionally, there is a complementary drink service available and alcoholic beverages are served until 4 a.m.

The room offers various games including no-limit hold’em, Omaha, and seven-card stud. For the $1/$2 no-limit hold’em games, the buy-in ranges from $100 to $500. As for the $2/$5 games, the buy-in is set between $300 and $1,000.

Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun, both prominent poker rooms in the area, surpass the size of the mentioned poker rooms. With over 100 tables, Foxwoods Resort Casino boasts a significant advantage, while Mohegan Sun offers a respectable 42 tables. Despite their larger capacities, these Connecticut-based poker rooms, located a mere 75 miles away, have imposed buy-in limits of $300 for the $1/$2 games and $500 for the $2/$5 games.

A smoke-free property

MGM Springfield ensures a smoke-free environment throughout its property. Nevertheless, there are two specific outdoor areas designated for smoking, with one conveniently located on State Street just outside the poker room.
