On March 28, the retail Caesars Sportsbook at Raynham Park will commence its journey towards receiving approval.

According to MGC spokesperson Thomas Mills, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is scheduled to discuss the joint retail sports betting license application of the two operators. The complete agenda for the meeting on March 28 is yet to be released, as informed by Mills to Play MA via email.

Two months ago, Raynham Park submitted its Category 1 license application. However, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has been primarily focused on launching online sports betting in the state. As a result, the joint venture between Raynham Park and Caesars is now finally being addressed.

Caesars Sportsbook at Raynham Park details

The fourth retail sportsbook in Massachusetts would be the Caesars Sportsbook Massachusetts located at Raynham Park. Currently, the state has three other retail sportsbooks operating at its casinos: WynnBET at Encore Boston Harbor, BetMGM at MGM Springfield, and Barstool Sportsbook at Plainridge Park Casino. Additionally, according to state law, there is room for one more retail sportsbook to open at Suffolk Downs.

Located approximately 30 miles to the south of Boston, Raynham Park stands as one of the two authorized horse betting simulcast establishments in Massachusetts, the other being Suffolk Downs. In the past, Raynham Park used to host greyhound racing, but it was discontinued in 2009 following the state’s prohibition on the sport. Since then, it has transformed into the Raynham Park Simulcast Center.

The potential Caesars Sportsbook at Raynham Park is set to be an immense establishment. It will occupy its own separate area spanning approximately 30,000 square feet, providing ample room for up to 2,000 individuals. With an estimated price tag of $28 million, this grand venue will include a restaurant, two bars, 800 seats, and 20 betting kiosks.

The owners have high expectations that the permanent sportsbook will be finished by June. In the meantime, Caesars plans to set up a temporary sportsbook within the simulcast facility before spring arrives.

Eric Hession, president of Caesars Digital, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership by stating, “Raynham Park, situated in the southeastern region of Massachusetts, boasts an exceptional location and will stand out as one of the limited retail sports betting destinations in the state. Collaborating with the Carney family, who possess deep roots in the community and an ambitious vision for an incredible sports entertainment and pari-mutuel simulcasting facility, is truly remarkable.”

Will the MGC approve the application?

During the discussion about the review timeline for Raynham Park’s Category 1 application, MGC commissioners highlighted the distinctiveness of this review compared to casino applications. They pointed out that Raynham Park and Caesars approached this process more collaboratively, resembling a joint application, unlike the casinos where both the establishments and their sportsbook operators share common ownership.

However, there is no justification for the MGC to reject the application. Despite raising concerns about other operators in past license application reviews, the MGC ultimately approved every single operator.

On March 10, the MA online sportsbook app was introduced by Caesars.

Despite previous speculation that BetRivers may be Suffolk Downs’ retail sports betting partner, the identity of this partner is still undisclosed. However, BetRivers has confirmed its decision not to pursue an application in Massachusetts.

Raynham Park has the potential to collaborate with an operator for the purpose of providing online sports betting, although no specific operator has been chosen at this time.
