Correction: In a previous version of this article, it was mistakenly stated that April 17 was the date for the release of March online sports betting revenue. However, as April 17 is observed as Orthodox Easter, the actual release date will be April 18, which is the first business day following April 15.

The release of Massachusetts’ inaugural online sports betting revenue figures is anticipated for April 18.

The data will consist of distinct revenue figures obtained from all six Massachusetts online sportsbooks, namely DraftKings Sportsbook, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, WynnBET, FanDuel, and Barstool Sportsbook. These numbers will only cover the period from the launch date, March 10, to March 31. Nevertheless, this information will provide valuable insight into the hierarchical structure of Massachusetts’ online sportsbooks.

Thomas Mills, spokesperson for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, informed Play MA that the state plans to disclose the online sports betting revenue figures simultaneously with the retail casino revenue figures. Historically, the monthly casino revenue reports have been made available on the 15th of the subsequent month. In case the 15th falls on a weekend, the reports are released on the following business day.

January reports are released in February, February reports are released in March, and so on.

Circle April 18 on your calendar, as April 15 is a Saturday and April 17 is the observed holiday for Orthodox Easter falling on a Monday.

In February, Massachusetts casinos generated a total of $25.7 million from sports bets.

What will MA online sportsbook revenue reports include?

Mills highlighted that the approach for reporting online sports betting revenue will mirror the strategy employed for retail sales in January, emphasizing its similarity.

This implies: The information includes licensee-specific breakdowns of both handle and revenue totals, along with the revenue hold percentage and the taxes paid to Massachusetts.

Certain states provide more detailed revenue reports. In Colorado, betting numbers for each sport are listed, and in Illinois, the number of parlays is reported. On the other hand, Tennessee does not provide a breakdown by operator.

Mills stated that the MGC is currently in the process of deliberating whether to incorporate detailed breakdowns of bet types and the sports that receive the highest number of bets.

Staggering handle, revenue totals expected

Massachusetts’ March online sports betting totals could potentially reach staggering amounts, judging by the level of activity observed during launch weekend. This is particularly noteworthy when taking into account the betting activity anticipated for March Madness, which Play MA estimates could surpass $120 million in Massachusetts.

During the launch weekend in Massachusetts (March 10-12), GeoComply, the geolocation technology company utilized by sportsbooks, revealed that over 406,000 bettor accounts engaged in 8.1 million geolocation transactions. This figure was almost twice the number recorded in Arizona and Virginia, both states of similar magnitude. Remarkably, Massachusetts ranked as the fifth busiest state in terms of activity, trailing behind New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio as the top sports betting states.
