PointsBet has decided to withdraw its online sports betting application in Massachusetts, thus resulting in the cancellation of the launch of a PointsBet Massachusetts app.

During the meeting held by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission on Thursday, the update was disclosed.

Karen Wells, the Executive Director of MGC, informed her fellow commissioners that they would be pulling out from Massachusetts.

Recently, there have been reports indicating that PointsBet would not be prepared for the online sports betting launch in Massachusetts on March 10, and possibly not even in the entire month of March. However, the latest update reveals that the rapidly growing sportsbook app has decided to completely withdraw from Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts, the number of approved online sports betting companies has been reduced to just 10.

  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars Sportsbook
  • WynnBET
  • Barstool Sportsbook
  • Betr
  • May 2023 will see the launch of Bally Bet.
  • The launch of Fanatics Sportsbook is scheduled for May 2023.
  • Betway (launching next year)

Bally Bet, Fanatics, Betway will be delayed

During Thursday’s MGC meeting, it was further disclosed that Bally Bet and Fanatics Sportsbook have plans to launch in May, whereas Betway’s launch has been delayed until 2024. It is important to note that the companies do not face any issues; they simply require more time to prepare for their respective launches.

Despite recently expanding into Maryland in November, PointsBet has decided to withdraw from Massachusetts, which comes as a surprise. This decision is unexpected considering that PointsBet could have capitalized on the opportunity to gain a substantial market share, especially without competition from BetRivers, outside of the top four competitors, namely DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook.

Impact of PointsBet pulling out of Massachusetts

DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, and Caesars Sportsbook are expected to have a larger market share in Massachusetts’ sports betting industry than previously anticipated, as PointsBet and BetRivers will not be launching in the state. Although WynnBET and Barstool Sportsbook may gain some local traction through their loyalty programs connected to their retail casino sportsbooks at Encore Boston Harbor and Plainridge Park Casino, their market dominance is likely to be overshadowed by the four major players.

Online sports betting will be launched by Massachusetts on March 10th at 10 a.m. The state has permitted legal retail sports betting at three of its casinos, namely EBH, PPC, and MGM Springfield, since January 31st.
