Massachusetts Man Gets Second Lottery Win, This Time For $15 Million

The majority of lottery players aspire to strike it lucky one day and achieve a massive victory, like winning a seven-figure sum.

John Hammill of Braintree, Massachusetts is one of the rare individuals who, after achieving a million-dollar victory, contemplates the possibility of repeating such a triumph.

Hammill, who had previously won $1 million in a Massachusetts Lottery scratch game fifteen years ago, has now struck luck again with an even more substantial cash reward. This time, Hammill emerged victorious with a staggering $15 million win in the Massachusetts Millionaires’ Club game.

Hammill beats the odds again, takes one-time payment of $9.75M

Hammill was presented with two alternatives for receiving his prize. He could opt to receive his winnings in increments of $750,000 annually for a duration of 20 years. Alternatively, he could choose to receive a lump sum payment, albeit at a reduced amount. Hammill ultimately decided on the latter option, resulting in him being granted $9,750,000 before taxes.

The Massachusetts Millionaires’ Club is a scratch game that costs $30 to play. Players have more than a 1 in 3 probability of winning a minimum of $40 in the game. However, the chances of winning the grand prize of $15 million are 1 in 5,376,000.

Hammill purchased his winning Massachusetts Millionaires’ Club ticket from the Adams Variety store located in Quincy. As a result, the store receives an impressive $50,000 bonus for being the vendor responsible for selling the winning ticket.

Wins $15M prize 15 years after previous million-dollar lottery prize

In 2006, Hammill emerged victorious in a Massachusetts online lottery scratch game known as Set for Life, winning a whopping $1 million. This particular game served as the inspiration for the lottery’s present-day hit game, Lucky for Life.

Lucky for Life has recently transitioned from a bi-weekly drawing game to a daily drawing format, where the top prize remains the same at $1,000 per day for life. However, this prize is now paid out as $7,000 every week.

Fifteen years ago, Hammill emerged victorious in the old Set for Life game, securing the second prize of $1 million. This game required a $10 entry fee and offered a grand prize of $100,000 annually for life.

Leonard Thomas of South Dennis recently claimed a $500,000 Powerball prize just one day before his ticket was set to expire, making it the latest exciting news from the Massachusetts online lottery prior to Hammill’s win.

Thomas realized he had won the prize in the August 19, 2020 drawing just before the expiration deadline, which allowed him to claim his prize on August 18, 2021.

Following Thomas’ claim of his winnings, Massachusetts, along with various states nationwide, commenced introducing a third weekly Powerball drawing on Mondays, in addition to the existing Wednesday and Saturday drawings.

The MA Lottery has recently declared a new profit milestone, surpassing $1.1 billion for the fiscal year that just concluded.
