Types of NFL passing props
The majority of NFL passing bets that you come across are going to either be futures wagers or prop bets. In either case, you’re going to have a few options depending on the time of year and how well the quarterback positions for each organization have been solidified. For the most part, the bets are going to fall into a couple of categories:
- Most QB passing yards: This one can’t be much more self-explanatory, but that doesn’t mean it is an easy wager to get right. In the end, what you’re looking to do is correctly pick which QB is going to have the most NFL passing yards on the season. It isn’t always the most talented QB on the best team who earns the passing yards title, either. In 2019, for example, Jameis Winston led the league with 5,109 yards — 207 more than second-place finisher Dak Prescott.
- Most QB passing touchdowns: In this case, select the NFL quarterback who ends the regular season with the most passing touchdowns. Interceptions won’t matter for this wager. A quarterback could lead in both TDs and INTs and still win the touchdown passing title.
- QB totals — passing TDs over/under: If you’re familiar with the various bets at legal sportsbooks, you’ll be aware of what a total bet is. Commonly known as an over/under, this is a bet on whether a quarterback will throw for over or under a line that the sportsbook sets.

Times have definitely changed since the NFL and AFL merger. Back in 1966 when 23-year-old Joe Namath was making a name for himself as a brazen young New York Jets quarterback, he led the league with just 3,379 passing yards. The most for that decade came in 1967, when Namath set the NFL record with 4,007 passing yards over the course of the regular season.
In the 1970s, the most passing yards came in 1979, when Dan Fouts of the San Diego Chargers threw for 4,082 yards to create a new league record. The fewest passing yards that decade to win the title came in 1974 when Cincinnati Bengals QB Ken Anderson threw for 2,667.
The 1980s saw the continued rise of the passing game as the focal point for professional teams, and Dan Marino didn’t take long to make his mark on the NFL as he came into the league at 22 years old and set the record at the time with 5,084 yards in 1984. The fewest yards in the decade to win the passing title came in 1987 when Neil Lomax threw for 3,387 yards for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Marino’s record continued to hold through the 1990s, during which time the most yards in a season tallied 4,690, accomplished by Houston Oilers signal-caller Warren Moon (who also had the passing record in 1990 with 4,689). The fewest yards to take the top spot in the 1990s was Jeff George with 3,917 yards for the Oakland Raiders in 1997.
From 2000 to 2010, Marino’s record was only threatened once, and that was in 2008 when Drew Brees ended the year with 5,069 yards for the New Orleans Saints. Brees would go on to finally set the record in 2011 with his 5,476-yard performance. The fewest yards in the 2000s to take the top spot? Tom Brady’s 4,110-yard performance in 2005 while quarterbacking the New England Patriots.
As of the end of the 2021 season, the record of 5,477 yards set by then-37-year-old Peyton Manning as a member of the Denver Broncos has continued to stand. Brady came the closest to the mark with his 2021 performance in Tampa with 5,316 yards.
